How it works

Profit margin here is the profit on one sale divided by what the buyer pays you for it: the item price plus the shipping you charge. Profit is what is left after Etsy's fees, your materials, labor and packaging, and the shipping label.

Most Etsy fees are a share of the item price plus shipping: the 6.5% transaction fee and 3% payment processing for a US bank account. Two are flat: $0.25 of processing per order and a $0.20 listing fee per sale. So the price plus shipping you need is your costs plus the flat fees, divided by 1 minus the fee rates minus your margin. Take away the shipping you charge and you have the list price.

The ad-sale price adds the Offsite Ads rate (15%, or 12% once a shop passes $10,000 in sales over 365 days) to the fee rates. Etsy caps that fee at $100 an order, which only matters on orders over about $666. If the fee rates and your margin add up to 100% or more, no price works and the calculator says so. Sales tax is left out: Etsy also charges processing on it, a few cents on most orders.

A worked example

Take a 14 oz 3-wick candle from the example shop inside the True Profit System for Etsy Sellers workbook: $9.80 of materials, $4.00 of labor, $1.60 of packaging and a $7.40 label, with $6.50 of shipping charged. For a 30% margin it needs a list price of $31.93. The buyer pays $38.43 with shipping, Etsy's fees come to $4.10, and the sale keeps $11.53. If the order came through an Offsite Ad at 15%, the price would need to be $44.60 for the same margin. Round up, never down: $31.93 becomes $32.00. These are the workbook's own Pricing tab numbers.

Your margin on every listing, not just one

The True Profit System for Etsy Sellers workbook uses this same maths for Excel and Google Sheets: true profit and margin on every listing with an OK, WATCH or REPRICE flag against your target, the price for a profit or a margin, an order log, a payout check to the cent and a tax reserve. $2.99, instant download.

Questions

How do I work out the price for a profit margin on Etsy?

Add up your costs for one item and Etsy's flat fees ($0.25 processing and the $0.20 listing fee), then divide by 1 minus the fee rates (6.5% transaction and 3% processing) minus your margin. Take away the shipping you charge. This calculator does it for you.

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit as a share of your cost. Margin is profit as a share of the price. A 30% margin on a $38.43 sale is $11.53 of profit; the same $11.53 is a much bigger markup on costs of $22.80.

Why does an Offsite Ads sale need a higher price?

Etsy takes 15% (or 12% for shops past $10,000 a year) of the item price plus shipping on orders it attributes to its ads. That comes out of your margin, so the price has to rise to keep the same margin.

Why does the calculator say no price works?

When Etsy's fee rates plus your margin reach 100% of the sale, every extra dollar of price is used up by fees and margin. Lower the margin you want, or lower your costs.

I sell from outside the US. Does this work?

Yes, if you type your own fee rates. Etsy's payment processing fee depends on the country of your bank account.

Is this financial advice?

No. It is a planning estimate based on the numbers you enter.
