How it works
Startup cost has two parts. The one-time spend is what you buy or pay before the first haul: the truck or trailer (or its down payment), dollies, straps and safety gear, insurance or licenses due up front, and your launch ads. The cushion is a few months of the costs that run every month, kept on hand while bookings grow.
Cash to start is the one-time spend plus the cushion. The cushion is not spent if jobs cover your costs, so the calculator earns back only the one-time spend.
Each job earns it back with its profit: the quote minus the price floor. The floor already pays every person on the truck at your break-even rate, counts drive time, vehicle miles and dump fees, covers your monthly costs and sets aside self-employment and income tax, so what is left over is free to repay the startup spend. Jobs to earn it back is the one-time spend divided by the profit in one job, rounded up. Weeks at your pace divides that by your jobs a week, rounded up.
A worked example
The Junk Removal Pricing Calculator's example has $715 a month of business costs and a half truck load (2 people, 1.5 hours on site each, a 30-mile round trip, $75 of supplies and dump fees) quoted at $485, with $75.38 of profit inside it. The startup amounts here are example figures we chose to show the maths, not prices: $4,000 toward a trailer, $400 of tools and gear, $600 of up-front insurance and licenses and $500 of launch ads make $5,500 of one-time spend. Add 3 months of $715 and the cash to start is $7,645. At $75.38 a job it takes 73 half loads to earn back the $5,500, about 13 weeks at 6 jobs a week. Already own the truck? Type 0 in the first box and the count drops to 20.

Questions
How much does it cost to start a junk removal business?
Most of it is the truck or trailer, so the answer depends on what you already own and whether you buy, finance or lease. Type your own quotes into the calculator. The example on this page totals $7,645 with a 3-month cushion, but those startup amounts are examples, not prices.
What if I finance the truck?
Put the down payment in the first box and the monthly payment in your monthly business costs. The cushion then covers the payments too.
What is profit in one job?
The quote minus the job's price floor. The floor pays every person on the truck at your break-even rate, counts drive time, miles and dump fees, and covers your monthly costs and the tax on your pay. Only what is left over pays back startup spend.
Why keep months of costs on hand?
Bookings can be slow at first while insurance, phone, ads and payments still come due. A cushion of monthly costs pays them while you build the calendar. How many months is your choice.
Is this tax or financial advice?
No. It is a planning estimate from the numbers you type. Your own quotes, your insurer and your local license office decide the real costs.
